Despite Drumkeerin GAA Club not officially forming until 1933, Handball first started in Drumkeerin with the opening of a new handball alley in the village on Sunday 8th of September 1929.
As the following poster shows, the official opening of Drumkeerin Handball Alley was marked with a full programme of games and a celebratory dance to honour the occasion.
Many noted local dignatories attended the official opening. `

After the building of the alley, handball flourished in the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s when it lapsed for a time to be revived again in the late 60’s. Several marvellous tournaments were held throughout the years. however in later years (the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s), the handball alley was neglected until it’s demolishment in year 2000.
In recent years with the construction of a new handball alley at the club GAA grounds, handball is once again a thriving sport among Drumkeerin GAA club.
The slideshow below shows the handball/gym building and the handball court itself.
Many Connaught B underage handball titles have been won in recent years with James Gallagher & Paul Hazlette winning the Connacht U14 A title. Two of our players Darragh Flynn and Shauna Clancy were honoured with “Junior Handballer of the Year”, and “Ladies Handballer of the Year” award’s respectively in Leitrim in 2007. Maurice O’Donnell subsequently followed Junior’s success by winning the Leitrim “Junior Handballer of the Year” award for 2009.
